The HVSF Conservatory Company
A 20-week performance based training program for committed early career actors who have a passion for Shakespeare, and want to develop the skills necessary to create innovative collaborative theater in extraordinary spaces.
The Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival Conservatory Company, the foremost summer Shakespeare training program in New York, is an artistic home to practice and take risks. Working alongside our nationally recognized acting company on and off stage, the 6 to 8 actors we invite into the program each season are offered an unmatched opportunity to transition from students to professionals. Our specialty is practical experience that provides our alumnae with a competitive edge in the real world.
Beginning mid-April in New York City, this 5-month immersive program combines rehearsal with deep physical, vocal and imaginative exploration of Shakespeare’s text, before moving to Garrison in June, where Conservatory Company members understudy and perform supporting roles on the main stage at Boscobel. Conservatory Company members will then rehearse their own production in July, debut it under the tent in August, and finish out the season with a tour throughout the region during the first few weeks of September, and a final industry showcase performance in New York City.
HVSF is passionate about training, and believes it should be affordable, so we aim to subsidize the cost of our program with the hard work, energy, and talent of our Conservatory Company members. There is no tuition cost associated with the program. In fact, we house every company member while in residence and provide a small stipend to help defray living costs.
Participants are selected through auditions and are eligible to become Equity Membership Candidates.
